This programme has now got over 100,000 registered users and is still providing the NHS with the E-Learning solution delivering Basic IT Skills training for 1.2m staff.  The project achieved two major awards in its first year which is evidence that the programme identified learner expectations even for the 3rd largest employer in the World.

Peter West has been instrumental in managing the introduction and expansion of CLAIT Computer Based Assessment (CBA) and subsequently piloted the remote electronic moderation of e-portfolios for GCSE and GNVQ subjects.

Peter has been with OCR since it was formed. He joined RSA Examinations Board as a Scheme Manager in 1992 and managed a number of qualifications. Prior to joining the e-assessment team in 2000 Peter worked on the production and delivery of on-screen numeracy skills tests for trainee teachers, on behalf of the Teacher Training Agency. Peter’s previous employment includes managing a commercial training centre and FE Lecturing in IT and Business Studies.

OCR’s premier IT qualification CLAiT was originally developed in the early 1980’s. Since then it has undergone a number of updates. The latest of these was launched in September 2005.

The latest development for CLAiT includes the additional option of a Computer Based Assessment (CBA) route for the most popular level 1 and 2 units.

The CLAiT CBA option utilises bespoke systems to deliver tests via the internet to assess candidates’ work from live application software and application simulations environments.

For the Centre and candidate this results in:

  • the elimination of printouts having to be assessed by the tutor;
  • the elimination of parcels of candidates work having to be sent for moderation;
  • the removal of uncertainty about candidates performance;
  • the rapid electronic receipt of candidate results.
